A Small Bakery That Became a Symbol of Daejeon – Sungsimdang

When people talk about Daejeon, one place is mentioned almost every time — Sungsimdang.

Before visiting, I thought it was simply a famous bakery. But after going there myself, I understood why so many people love this place. The area around the bakery was already crowded with families, couples, and tourists carrying trays full of bread and desserts.

The moment I entered the bakery, the smell of warm butter and freshly baked bread filled the air. It honestly felt more like visiting a famous attraction than just stopping by a bakery. There were so many different kinds of pastries, cakes, sandwiches, and desserts that it became difficult to choose what to buy.

Of course, I had to try the famous 튀김소보로 (Fried Soboro Bread). The outside was crispy and slightly sweet, while the inside was soft and rich with flavor. After the first bite, I immediately understood why people buy boxes of it to take home.

What I liked most was the atmosphere. Even though Sungsimdang is very popular, it still felt warm and local rather than overly commercial. Some people quickly picked up their favorite breads like regular customers, while visitors like me slowly looked around the bakery and took photos.

In Korea, bakeries are not only places to buy bread. People spend time there with friends and family, enjoy desserts together, and experience the atmosphere. I think Sungsimdang represents this part of Korean culture very well.

If you ever visit Korea and travel outside of Seoul, I think Daejeon is worth visiting at least once. And if you go to Daejeon, Sungsimdang is definitely a place you should not miss.
