with an Old Friend at Ujeong in Seoul

Recently, I visited 우정닭발 in Sindang-dong, Seoul, with one of my high school friends whom I have known for almost 12 years.

It had actually been quite a long time since we last met, so I wondered for a moment if things might feel awkward at first. But surprisingly, the conversation started naturally as soon as we sat down. Maybe that is what happens with old friends. Even after time passes, some friendships still feel comfortable and familiar.

The restaurant already had a very lively atmosphere. People were talking loudly, sharing food, and enjoying drinks together after work. Since Sindang-dong is famous for its food alley, the streets were still busy even at night.

We ordered the famous Dakbal, Korean spicy chicken feet, along with rice balls and enoki mushrooms. When the food arrived, the bright red sauce honestly looked much spicier than I expected. I ordered the mild version, but Korean “mild spicy” food is usually not actually mild.

Still, the flavor was exactly my style.

It was definitely spicy, but not in a painful way. The sauce had a smoky and slightly sweet flavor that made it really addictive. The more I ate, the more I wanted another bite. I especially liked eating the Dakbal together with enoki mushrooms and rice balls because they balanced the spicy flavor really well.

What surprised me most was how tender the meat was. Sometimes Dakbal can feel difficult to eat, but the meat here came off the bones very easily. Even my friend, who does not usually eat Dakbal often, kept saying how good the sauce was.

Honestly, I think the food became even more memorable because of the atmosphere and the company. Sitting there, eating spicy food, laughing about old school memories, and talking comfortably after such a long time made the night feel simple but meaningful.

Sometimes the best meals are not only about famous restaurants or popular menus. They become memorable because of the people you share them with.

For me, 우정닭발 became one of those places connected to a really warm memory in Seoul.
